This site sits atop a finger of the Canadian Shield called the Frontenac Axis that extends south from Algonquin Park. The camp program consists of a boutique hotel, cabins and a lodge to accommodate gatherings of up to 500 people. A small existing on-site farm will be expanded with greenhouses to supplement the project’s food supply.

The landscape is transitional, containing both boreal and broadleaf forests. A landscape intensification in concept, the form inhabits the bi-level site where existing structures sit and the grades are most gentle. A framework of pre-manufactured engineered wood and steel, laminated triple glazing and assemblies of enhanced insulation values contribute to sustainability. Sheathed entirely in corrugated weathering steel, the compound will be durable and low maintenance while the interior is warm and acoustically soft, built of a mixture of site-native hard and soft woods. Canada’s uncontrolled fires confirm the need to build robust and less combustible buildings.
