Located on Soquel Creek, a 2,400 square foot, 60-year-old house is to be renovated and made more resilient to the effects of climate change. After the creek flooded in 2022, a 20-foot base floor elevation was dictated by FEMA and results in a net clearance above grade of 10 feet for living areas. To remove area from the flood plain, the ground floor bedrooms are relocated to a bridge that connects the upper level of the house to the sleeping area above the existing detached garage.
Original forms familiar to the neighborhood are maintained and newly sheathed in galvanized steel and heat-treated ash. Propped up on exposed and angled piers, new territory is realized, shaded and protected by the structure above, doubling the usable territory of the site.
