Mälarpark school in Västerås is situated on the border between the newly developed neighborhood of Öster Mälarstrand and a beautiful, forested area. It is shaped like an 'H,' framing two courtyards, one facing the city and the other facing the forest. The school accommodates 500 students from preschool to grade 6.

The urban planning concept is based on adapting the new construction as much as possible to the existing terrain and creating spaces with different characteristics.

The two-story school building is slightly lower than the surrounding buildings but follows the block form on the ground. The school building encloses a more urban entrance square and the main entrance facing Mälarparksvägen. This creates a clear entrance area for both visitors and students and teachers. The school was clear in its desire to have only one main entrance. On the other side, the school building encloses the schoolyard, which connects to the green area along the creek and a more natural approach to the outdoor environment.

The facade is detailed with contrasts in materials and textures. The wooden details are made of Accoya wood, the result of over 80 years of research and development in wood modification through acetylation. The type of wood used is fast-growing Radiata pine, and it is processed like any other pine wood. The wood is completely non-toxic and sourced solely from renewable FSC-certified forests. The concrete elements have different surface structures that separate the floor levels, creating a more dynamic facade.

The main entrance leads to a bright and open lobby. The sculptural staircase to the upper floor becomes a natural focal point. The large windows with lower sills allow ample natural light and serve as seating areas. The natural material choices, such as wood and limestone, create a warm and timeless impression. The school was completed in the fall of 2021.
