The Maple Rock Residence is a Northwest contemporary home built for entertaining and showcasing the homeowners’ extensive art collection. Scott Edwards Architecture listened carefully to the client's vision for their future lifestyle and performed multiple space planning studies as part of the process. A gallery-like aesthetic and a focus on indoor-outdoor integration are the pervasive elements in SEA’s design and serve in creating a functional and beautiful forever home for our clients.
From early in the design process, SEA understood that the Maple Rock Residence was to be a milestone in the clients’ lives. On the cusp of retirement and ready to determine the pace of their lives moving forward, their new home would play a large role in how their future would look. The interior of the home is open, bright, and facilitates entertaining. The main level opens from the foyer into a large great room that is anchored by a two-story flamed granite fireplace, custom built-in shelving, and a 40-foot-wide sliding door that connects the interior space with the patio. A sleek kitchen, 12-seat dining table, and custom coffee and spirits bar complete the space.
The client is a guitar enthusiast and has an extensive music collection. The first-floor music room provides custom shelving and a comfortable space to hang out and listen to or play music. The second story of the home has a bedroom wing and an office wing connected by a delicate bridge. The primary bedroom includes a balcony that looks over the backyard and toward the Coast Range. The sloped site allowed for a basement featuring a sauna, wine room, and bonus room.
Throughout the entire home, special consideration was given as to how the clients’ extensive art collection would be displayed. The design balances the need for walls from which to hang art with the desire to have bright, open spaces. SEA also considered how light, both sun and artificial, would impact the art and worked closely with the lighting consultant to develop solutions.
The exterior of the Maple Rock Residence exhibits contrasting elements and alludes to a Japanese aesthetic. The house is clad in western red cedar with a moody black finish. Vertical, warm-toned wood slats create visual interest and offer privacy while still allowing natural light in. The house and the landscape step with the natural profile of the land, and the landscaping helps mitigate the height differences throughout the site, acting as a functional piece within the design as it transitions grade changes.
