The Bergen Street housing project represents a further application of the infill site prototype originally developed for projects such as The Msgr. Anthony J. Barretta Apartments and 256 16th Street in Brooklyn. This project consists of six separate buildings, made up of three prototypical units, containing a total of 48 apartments. Each building is a four-and-a-half-story walkup and has an upper-floor duplex with mezzanine, and, in some cases, a partial cellar floor.
The glass enclosed stairwells at the building’s front afford a clear view of the street from within and can be clearly viewed from the sidewalk, thus adding to the building’s sense of security. The project reflects RKTB’s ongoing commitment to the research and development of low-cost housing alternatives.
