A Contemporary Façade with the Seagull as a Distinctive Feature
The redevelopment of Medische Kliniek Velsen called for an exterior that better reflected the organisation’s identity. The existing building’s form and the seagull featured in the clinic’s logo served as key starting points for creating a contemporary and distinctive façade.
Design Principles
The existing building has a triangular structure, which was carried through as a guiding design principle in the new façade. The seagull from the clinic’s logo also plays a prominent role in the design. The bird refers both to the clinic’s proximity to the coast and to the freedom it has to organise care in its own way: on a small scale, with a personal approach and a high level of professionalism.
Materials and Atmosphere
The new façade consists of bronze-coloured perforated panels that allow light and air to pass through. The same colour palette is reflected in accents and details throughout the interior, visually connecting the inside and outside of the building. The combination of colour, material and perforation creates a calm, high-quality appearance that avoids a clinical feel, making it well suited to a healthcare environment where comfort and experience are important.
Design Development and Engineering
Working closely with the design team, Metadecor translated the concept into a technically feasible façade solution. The perforation pattern, panel dimensions and detailing were developed as an integrated whole. Full-scale mock-up panels were installed on site to assess the façade’s appearance, depth and the visibility of the seagull from different viewing angles. Particular attention was paid to how the design would be experienced both at street level and from the nearby motorway.
