VA Fredericksburg Health Care Clinic

The Fredericksburg Veterans Affairs Outpatient Center redefines veteran-focused healthcare with a design that embodies dignity, wellness, and long-term adaptability. At 471,121 SF, it is the largest privately owned VA medical facility in the United States, located on a thoughtfully planned 48-acre site along Interstate 95.

Inspired by the regional character of Fredericksburg, the design introduces a “clinical village” concept—a network of smaller, interconnected buildings that reduce institutional scale and create a sense of comfort, familiarity, and community. The landscape integrates healing gardens and a central memorial, offering spaces for reflection, sensory engagement, and social connection.

The facility places Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) at the forefront, incorporating natural daylighting, acoustic optimization, thermal zoning, MERV 14 filtration, low-VOC materials, and enhanced ventilation aligned with ASHRAE 62.1 standards. Sustainability is woven throughout, with a high-performance building envelope, energy-efficient systems, low-water-use fixtures, and robust waste reduction strategies, resulting in a Two Green Globes certification.

Future flexibility is ensured through a modular structural grid that enables clinical spaces to be reconfigured with minimal disruption. Universal access principles—such as generous circulation paths, intuitive wayfinding, accessible restrooms, and distributed vertical transportation—make the environment welcoming and navigable for all users.
