When the clients – a young couple – approached KAID for their interior overhaul, they were keen on making it an art abode. “They knew that we specialised in eclectic design. Since they were clear that the apartment should take on a Modern-meets-Mediterranean vibe, with a touch of old-world charm, we made a good fit,” says the founder and chief interior designer of KAID.
The client – Advocate Nakul Sachdeva, an art collector enthusiast said, “The house needs to have a Mediterranean vibe with use of earthy colours/light walls. It needs to be designed around art works (painting and sculptures)”.
Co-owners, Karan Tuteja and Aakriti Tuteja, made sure to plan the apartment in such a way that it feels spacious yet warm and a meeting point for art collectors by demolishing the walls on the ground floor to provide for an extravagant yet classic space. The apartment is located in a serene locality of Mandakini Enclave, Alaknanda, situated in South Delhi and is park facing on one side which provides a delightful sight to it’s residents since it’s visible from all the 3 bedrooms of the apartment.
An arched entryway with black-toned double doors guides visitors into the foyer. As one enters the foyer, they are welcomed by a circular patterned flooring passage, serving undeniably as the area’s focal point, followed by the duplex staircase, with the kitchen and the powder washroom on the left. On the right side of the passage are 2 ornate windows that give a glimpse of the Immaculate dining area, just giving enough visual of the interiors but still maintaining privacy.
As one moves forward, they can see chesterfield pastel sofas with a traditional Mediterranean chandelier and fans, both procured from The White Teak Company, and an extravagant painting placed on a wooden backlit panel in red hues. The interiors of the drawing room are pastel and subtle, creating a canvas that allows for the furniture and paintings/artworks in a variety of colours to coexist.
The dining area, adjacent to drawing room has a ceiling drop creating space for natural lighting using vertical skylights in the upper floor terrace. The false ceiling has vertical wooden beams, giving an illusion of depth to the space. Arched style windows with fluted glass with marble borders cover most of the dining area boundary wall adding to the expanse of the hosting area.
The client had requested for a bar and space for his books in the common area so we incorporated a bar unit cum bookshelf cum crockery unit with a pop of blue colour to enhance the Mediterranean vibe of the abode. Hints of caning can also be spotted in the statement mandir cabinet as well as bar unit.
The subtle use of mirror on the master bedroom door and bar unit creates for a significant yet a minute detail creating visuals of a bigger space.
The master bedroom and it’s attached master washroom are quite chic and expansive.
The corner inside the room is marked by a black gloss traditional chandelier, a white boucle sofa with a painting on the wall to unwind after a long day. The other furniture pieces entirely in teak wood and veneer alongwith the wood panelled ceiling are the actual highlight of this Mediterranean master bedroom adding a sense of natural warmth in the space. Through the room, can be seen an exquisite view of the patio with full height glass doors.
The washroom is epitome of luxury with arched wall above the fully covered vanity. The wardrobe shutters has a CNC perforated design to match the classic black and white Victorian flooring.
As we ascend to the upper floor, each riser has a different Moroccan tile, giving the staircase an art museum look and feel. Here, the first guest bedroom on the right, situated on the upper floor, is a sanctum of peace and calm. “Warm and natural were the obvious choice of materials for this bedroom,” says Karan. The palette features laminate wood flooring and teak wood with greys and whites. The window with a bench seating overlooks the green patch of the park giving a zen-like feel to the bedroom. As one enters the attached washroom, one sees a pop of coloured handmade tiling on the mirror backsplash, hexagon floor tiling complementing the theme. The forest tones of the other guest bedroom on the upper floor set the room apart from the rest of the home. The green wardrobe and the highlight painting above the bed suggest a forest ambience.
The washroom, with an arched bathing cubicle and printed Moroccan tiles give a vintage Mediterranean look to the attached washroom.
