A Southern Sunscreen

brg3s as Renovation/Addition of existing space

brg3s Architects redesigned and reinvigorated the Emergency Department at the Methodist South Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Methodist is one of the leading healthcare providers in the Mid-South region, meaning easy access for their patients is a critical necessity. As long-time clients of the Memphis-based architecture firm, it was a natural step to approach brg3s about renovating Methodist South’s Emergency Department. The ER was unassuming, blending in with the rest of the hospital which made it hard for patients to find. brg3s stepped in to help assess the problem to make the Department more visible and comfortable for visiting patients.

brg3s reorganized the waiting space and opened up the reception area to make the entry way more welcoming and also to allow for more triage rooms, which the department was severely lacking. With the use of translucent glazing, they replaced the south-facing wall to quell the heat of the blazing sun and fill the room with natural diffused light. Finally, the addition of the high-contrast awning constructed of wood and metal paneling with bright glowing word “Emergency” tied it all together. Now patients have a much easier time finding the entrance and can wait in comfort during their visit.
