MOI

FOX Architects as Architects

Commercial furniture solutions provider MOI sought FOX Architects to design their new Baltimore headquarters and showroom. The company needed a space that could support a full spectrum of business functions as well as display products in a flexible, interactive setting, and provide space to connect with the community and return to their roots. The space also needed to incorporate the DIRTT interior construction product line.

Because MOI needed a space with public and private functionality, the design team created a pivot point — an axis at which the ceiling tilts and the floor ramps up, separating spaces with variable ceiling heights for environments that are respectively welcoming and intimate. This creative use of MOI’s partnership products showcases the product in action and transforms the large floor-to-slab volume into smaller spaces that suit different workstyles. Fostering a connection to the community, the design team integrated materials that echo the building’s exterior aesthetic: brick, corten steel, and black window frames on glass office fronts that mimic the building’s industrial look.

FOX Architects created custom graphics that give MOI a unique expression of Baltimore, featuring Poe’s “The Raven” poem, and iconic imagery of Old Bay, the Baltimore Orioles, Fort McHenry, and Natty Boh. Raised access flooring in the open office keeps this portion as flexible as the showroom, enabling MOI to reconfigure workspaces with ease. A large, flexible training room, freestanding huddle rooms, café, and adjacent outdoor patio provide many spaces for hosting events and collaborating with colleagues.

MOI’s new headquarters is more than a beautiful backdrop for displaying products — it is the creative embodiment of the design solutions they provide clients and their own staff.
