The client, who moved over from northern China almost two decades ago, sought a new home that balanced privacy with formal grandeur, accomodating both his family and the frequent diplomatic events he hosts as a business owner and appointed consul.

Organised along a central axis, the plan reflects the client's preference for linearity, progressing from public to private spaces. Set on a diamond-shaped site facing a lush secondary forest, the house is orientated east-west to reduce solar gain and harness cross-ventilation from prevailing monsoon winds. A key feature is the moon gate - formed by precast shading panels inspired by traditional Chinese architecture - which frames views of the forest and anchors the home both symbolically and spatially.

The layout supports the family's sociable lifestyle. Public-facing spaces such as the foyer and banquet hall welcome guests, while private areas are tucked away at the rear. Courtyards and water features connect these zones, arranged in a rhythm of increasing scale: From a modest single-storey foyer to a double-volume hall, culminating in the multi-storey residence. Though set on a generous plot, the compact footprint emphasizes framed views over floor area, creating an open, immersive relationship with the surrounding gardens and forest.

Crafted through contemporary construction techniques, the home features prefabricated sun-shading panels, translucent folding screens with laser-printed oriental motifs, and collaborations with local artisans. Highlights include handwoven textile screens and sculptural glass washbasins, enriching the material palette with cultural depth.
