Located on the Del Mar coast, near the lagoon and coastal bluffs, this project is about erosion; of sand and rock, and time. The project maps the discoveries of hidden artifacts and the scarring that etches even the strongest material, constructed upon a series of sluice gates, or battlements. These heavy "of the earth" fragments are the basis of the architect's knowledge, the foundation of the present and future.
The modern, rectangular jewel-box home of concrete, wood and steel situates the main living areas and bedrooms on the second floor, oriented to the coastal and lagoon views. Interior exposed steel beams highlight the simple structural elements, running the length of the house. Situated on a double lot, the expanse allows the young family an open floor plan with unobstructed views.
