Nave house is a family beach house located in Los Molles, a small resort town two hours away from the city of Santiago Chile. The man behind the building itself was architect Alvaro rojas Vio, who had the idea of a design that emulates the shape of a boat, accentuating the beach atmosphere in an area known for fishing, diving and tourism. It is now an architectural landmark in the town. An abstraction of a boat with a 360° view.
Nave House is also solution to a problem of available lot space. In fact, it is situated in an area of only 244 sq/m, which after applying regulatory requirements such as front yard space, land gradient, and building footprint of only 70 sq/m of surface area.
The architect managed to accommodate all these aspects into the house. Nave not only evokes a nautical theme, with two large circular windows in the front, but also combines the dimensions of both a house and a cottage, creating a special combination of the comfort of a home in the city and the simplicity of a second home with ocean views.
The house has a a total of 93 sq/m, rises upon the pilings of three levels: the ground floor, which houses the garage and cellar, the second level which accommodates a kitchen, family room, guest bathroom, two bedrooms and terrace, and the top floor with the master bedroom, a private bathroom, and a small terrace connected by a bridge to a larger terrace in the roof. All the spaces were conceived in order to contemplate the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
Among its features is the use of affordable materials with excellent durability and low maintenance, including fiber cement painted in three colors to simulate the texture of the wood that covers the whole house, a ceiling with curved laminated wood beams and a slate floor along the most travelled spaces of the house. Furthermore, the whole design is oriented towards energy efficiency, with a thermal insulation system through the use of natural light throughout its architecture, provided mainly by the orientation of windows that regulate sunlight.
The economic design that inspired the Nave House includes some refined details that increase the value of the property. One of them is the glazed flooring made from wood originally from Puerto Varas, a typical forested area of southern Chile, which was moved specifically for this project. Its installation in the living and bedrooms undoubtedly achieves a higher standard than that of a traditional summer house.
