For 150 years, the Flora, one of Cologne's most important historical buildings, has been a place of living urban history. Due to considerable structural deficiencies, the listed building was completely renovated from 2011 to 2014 according to the plans of the Stuttgart planning office K+H Architekten. The main goal was to restore the historical appearance with contemporary building standards.
For the reconstruction of the circumferential fenestration, the planners chose heat-insulating steel profiles in agreement with the city and the monument authorities. Janisol, Janisol Primo and Janisol Arte were used to adapt the windows to the style of the building. The approximately two-metre wide and six-metre high elements on the ground floor, for example, are a complex construction consisting of a relatively solid, load-bearing part and an insert element that is offset inwards by 60 millimetres.
