Some houses are defined by their walls, while others are defined by the spaces between them. Nguyen’s House belongs to the latter. Rather than treating voids as leftover spaces, the project places them at the heart of the architectural strategy, allowing light, air, and vegetation to shape the experience of living.
Designed for a young family in a dense urban neighborhood of Ho Chi Minh City, the house responds to a familiar challenge: how can a home remain private without becoming disconnected from nature? Instead of maximizing built volume, the design deliberately reserves generous open spaces within the building itself, transforming the interior into a calm environment that feels detached from the intensity of the surrounding city.
The house unfolds around a sequence of vertical and horizontal voids that connect different levels both physically and visually. At its center, a large atrium works together with two skylights to distribute daylight throughout the interior while encouraging natural ventilation. Glass-block walls soften direct sunlight, creating a constantly changing atmosphere where shifting shadows become part of everyday life rather than incidental effects.
Nature is introduced not as a separate garden but as an integral component of the architecture. Small planted areas are carefully positioned alongside circulation routes and living spaces, ensuring that greenery accompanies daily activities instead of remaining confined to a single outdoor area. As residents move through the house, the relationship between architecture and landscape is continuously renewed.
Crossing above the atrium, a timber bridge becomes one of the defining moments of the project. Beyond connecting the upper-floor rooms, it offers a unique perspective across the entire interior, revealing the layered relationship between open space, vegetation, and natural light. Movement through the house therefore becomes more than circulation—it becomes an architectural experience.
Materiality plays a supporting rather than dominant role. A restrained palette, led by black surfaces, establishes a quiet background against which daylight and plants become the true protagonists. As natural conditions change throughout the day, the character of each space changes with them, giving the house a subtle sense of rhythm without relying on decorative elements.
The interior follows the same philosophy of reduction. Every unnecessary detail has been removed so that proportion, atmosphere, and spatial continuity define the identity of the home. Instead of seeking visual complexity, the project embraces clarity, allowing the quality of space itself to become the primary expression of architecture.
For Butecco Design & Build, Nguyen’s House is an exploration of how absence can become a design tool. By prioritizing void over mass and experience over form, the project demonstrates that a peaceful urban home can be created not by separating people from the city, but by carefully shaping the environment they inhabit within it.
