NORDHALEØEN

URBAN POWER as Architects

Constructing an artificial island in the north harbour, secures Copenhagen against future floodings, while also solving the issue of connecting the two isolated urban areas of Refshaleøen and Nordhavnen.

Built from surplus soil, the island creates new, attractive building sites, making the plan self-financing through the sales. Furthermore, the plan features the establishment of natural recreational areas, as well as a transit hub.

URBAN POWER designed the visionary project for Nordhaleøen as a contribution to the debate of the future challenges of Copenhagen.

Rather than the proposed plan to construct a tunnel, which is comprehensive, expensive and benefits only polluting car traffic, the proposed island would prioritize green mobility like metro, while also providing bicyclists with a green and interesting route.

NordhaleØen would relocate some functions from what is becoming more and more central parts of Copenhagen, and provide new possibilities for leisure activities. The island would accommodate a ferry terminal, an energy producing wastewater treatment plant and a new metroline, connecting the island with both northern and southern Copenhagen.
