In this projects, the task was to give a vigorous external form to what in essence is an assemblage of windowless spaces for housing delicate exchange circuitory and at the same time respond to existing exchange buildings which are built of exposed brick. Broad vertical and narrow horizontal bands of concrete painted white are used as effective counterpoints to exterior brick-work walls resulting in a sculpted external massing. Thus, this building represents a reaction against the neutral "box" so familiar in many modern buildings throughout the world.
