The O’Brien Farm Foundation, a non-profit organization in St. John’s, Newfoundland, sought to create a new facility that would celebrate the province’s agricultural legacy while supporting modern educational programming. The site’s deep cultural roots and pastoral setting called for an approach that balanced respect for tradition with a forward-looking design. The challenge lay in integrating new construction into this historic landscape in a way that felt both authentic and contemporary.

The design team envisioned a modest, light-filled structure that reflects the warmth and simplicity of traditional farm buildings. The program is organized around two levels: a ground-floor exhibition space dedicated to public education, and a second-floor kitchen and multipurpose area designed for workshops and community events.

A defining feature of the design is the system of wooden screens that wrap the structures. These slatted elements filter daylight into the multipurpose room, animating the interior throughout the day, while allowing the building to glow softly from within at night — a lantern-like presence on the landscape. Locally sourced materials and careful craftsmanship reinforce the connection to place, while efficient systems and durable detailing ensure longevity and sustainability.

Completed in 2023, the O’Brien Farm Foundation stands as a symbol of renewal and stewardship — a space that honors the land’s agricultural past while fostering education and community engagement for the future. The building has become both a destination and a gathering place, embodying the Foundation’s mission to keep Newfoundland’s farming traditions alive.
