Bennett’s Road House began with a modest family cabin overlooking a pond in rural Newfoundland, a place layered with memory, tradition, and generations of craftsmanship. Originally built by the homeowner’s grandfather, the cabin held deep sentimental value and became the foundation for a transformation that balances preservation with contemporary living.

Rather than replacing the existing structure, the design embraces it as the heart of the home. The original cabin was carefully retained and reimagined, allowing its history and character to remain legible within the new intervention. Existing foundations and framing were preserved wherever possible, maintaining a clear connection to the original structure while reducing material waste and unnecessary demolition.

The renovation opens the cabin to the surrounding landscape through a new pitched roof that replaces the original low structure, creating generous interior volumes and allowing natural light to extend throughout the living spaces. Expansive glazing frames views of the pond and surrounding terrain, strengthening the connection between the interior and site.

A contemporary addition extends from the original cabin and accommodates new program spaces including a garage, guest suite, office, and woodworking shop. The addition is designed as a distinct volume that complements the scale and character of the existing structure without directly replicating it.

Craftsmanship became central to the project’s identity. Much of the custom millwork and interior detailing was fabricated by the homeowner within the newly integrated workshop, embedding another layer of personal authorship into the home. 

Bennett’s Road House is ultimately a project about continuity, preserving the spirit of a place while allowing it to evolve for future generations. Through adaptive reuse and careful intervention, the project demonstrates how architecture can honour memory while creating new opportunities for gathering, living, and making.
