It is a renovation project from ShangHai textile workshop.
As an industry workshop, the interior space is quite structured by 12 concrete column with caps. They compose 6 cubes with 6m x 6m x 5.2m.
We design an “umbrella” in each cube, which is composed with 4 wooden semiarch.
The big ones are used as entrance and communication area, the small ones define the we-work area, and “support” several glass volumes which are used as individual offices.
In my opinion, interior space and traditional Chinese garden are quite similar in some aspects. They are both enclosed with walls, separated from nature but always remind users of the nature.
In this design, I try to find a new way for space organizations. Rebuild the space in structure, with the method of blank-leaving to distinguish with outdoor and indoor. The design is worked in an metaphorical way, not just in form or text.
We try to discuss three questions in the design. The first one is in-out. The second one is root metaphor. The third one is anti-tectonic.
As for the strict budget, it is quite different from our design and completed result. It is although a creative and original design with our thoughts on architecture.
