CAPSULES: A PILOT FOR AUTONOMOUS LIVING IN UTAH
The capsule houses are conceived as autonomous desert micro-habitats designed to operate off-grid while minimizing their impact on the fragile Utah landscape. Responding to the extreme climate, the architecture incorporates passive solar orientation, deep overhangs, and natural ventilation strategies that significantly reduce energy demand.
To preserve the sculptural purity of the structures, photovoltaic panels are not integrated into the buildings but are instead located in a discreet ground-mounted solar field within the surrounding landscape. This allows optimal solar exposure while maintaining the architectural integrity of the capsules. Energy produced on site is stored in battery systems, enabling each unit to function independently from the grid, while water conservation and recycling strategies further enhance environmental sustainability.
Envisioned as a pilot project in Utah, the proposal explores a model of modular, self-sufficient desert living that could be adapted to similar remote landscapes worldwide.
CONCEPTUAL DESIGN AND MORPHOLOGICAL EXPERIMENTATION
The project explores a residence–observatory conceived not as an imposition on the desert landscape, but as an extension of it. The design emerges from morphological experimentation with the region’s topography, translating the geometries of mesas, plateaus, and eroded canyons into a contemporary architectural language.
The resulting structure takes the form of a low, elongated prism articulated by inclined planes that echo the surrounding rocky terrain. Rather than existing as a discrete object, the building is conceived as a geological condition—an architectural formation that appears to emerge from the desert itself.
MATERIALITY AND INTEGRATION
The material strategy prioritizes environmental resilience and visual integration. A palette derived from the chromatic spectrum of the Utah earth informs the surfaces, producing textures that evoke natural erosion.
Partially embedded in the ground, the structure merges with the existing topography while benefiting from the earth’s thermal mass for passive cooling. The interplay between exposed and subterranean volumes establishes a continuous dialogue between architecture and terrain, reinforcing the perception of the building as an extension of the site.
INHABITATION AS OBSERVATION
Spatial organization reflects a framework in which inhabitation becomes an act of observation. Semi-subterranean private areas transition into projecting volumes that extend into the landscape, intensifying the relationship with the desert.
The residence spans approximately 150 sqm. Bedrooms are positioned below ground level for thermal stability and privacy, while communal and observational spaces are elevated to capture panoramic views. Circulation unfolds along a gently inclined slab, reinforcing spatial continuity and a unified architectural identity.
ARCHITECTURAL PHILOSOPHY
The volumes are conceived as dynamic rather than static. Inclined planes, sharp geometries, and cantilevered elements generate a sense of tension, as if the forms were captured in a moment of geological transformation.
The dialogue between architecture and ground is central: volumes emerge from the earth, align with natural slopes, or hover lightly above the terrain. Equilibrium is not the primary objective; instead, the design seeks intensity—of form, space, and perception. Beauty emerges through contrast and controlled instability, reflecting the raw character of the desert landscape.
DESERT OBSERVATORY HOUSE
The project ultimately proposes an architectural condition in which the landscape acts as a co-author of form. Through geomorphological references, chromatic integration, and bioclimatic strategies, it constructs an intermediate territory between the natural and the artificial.
Here, habitation becomes a contemplative interface with the desert—an inhabitable outcrop where architecture operates simultaneously as shelter and as an instrument of observation.
