Defined by its thoughtful restraint and seamless integration with its surroundings, Onchae is a minimalist residence utilizing a controlled material palette, strategic cantilevers, and expansive glass walls to capture river views while mitigating harsh western sunlight. Situated on a down-slope lot, the site presents a quiet street presence that descends toward expansive views of an adjacent river.
The objective was to create a "warm and welcoming home"—the literal translation of Onchae—serving as a simple, unpretentious family retreat. Fulfilling the client's request for calm, the front facade remains deliberately minimal. However, the site's greatest asset presented a primary constraint: the river view faces directly west. This risked exposing the home to intense afternoon heat, requiring a delicate design balance to maximize panoramic scenery without compromising thermal comfort.
The architectural response is grounded in honesty, reduction, and a conscious dialogue with the natural environment. The approach to the home is shaped as a deliberate sequence transitioning from the outside world. The terrace and foyer function as intermediary spaces, each carrying a distinct atmosphere. Illuminated by focused beams of light, the terrace feels warm and welcoming, while the foyer is cooler, more restrained, and subtly masculine.
Calmness within these spaces is achieved by reducing visual noise through a tightly restricted material palette. Ulin wood is paired with pine-textured concrete to create harmony, allowing the furniture and landscape to stand out. Natural and intentional artificial lighting creates subtle gradations of shadow, and keeping certain zones dimmer allows architectural depth to emerge naturally.
To resolve the western exposure at the rear of the home, deep cantilevers serve as essential shading. These projections block direct heat while allowing the facade to remain highly transparent. Expansive, floor-to-ceiling glass walls with minimal frame profiles blur the threshold between the interior and the landscape, facilitating optimal cross-ventilation and uninterrupted views.
Spatially, the home is defined by transition and rhythm. To directly support the client's desire for interpersonal connection, the living room was intentionally designed without a television. Instead of a digital screen, the dynamic natural scenery serves as the primary focal point. This transforms the space into a dedicated environment for conversation, where the family can share stories and be fully present with one another.
Ultimately, Onchae stands as a testament to conscious, deliberate living. By seamlessly integrating passive cooling strategies with thoughtful spatial curation, the residence respects its environment through reduced energy consumption.
Its lasting legacy is a deeply human space where architecture quietly recedes into the background, eliminating modern distractions and proving that architecture is not merely about shaping spaces, but about nurturing the relationships within them.
