Park Mansion

This project is a 1,002-unit residential development planned for Minato-ku, Tokyo. It integrates a portion of the former Ministry of Communications’ Postal Life Insurance Bureau headquarters building, completed in 1929, with new construction.

The overall concept is “Old Craft & New Tech,” encompassing the preservation and revitalization of the existing building, inheriting the intentions of past builders and incorporating the original design elements. This is combined with sophisticated modern design to create a timeless aesthetic. The materials used in the former Postal Life Insurance Bureau headquarters featured highly decorative handcrafted elements that are difficult to replicate today. By utilizing, reconstructing, and reusing these rare materials, original textures, and materials imbued with memories, the project layers elements from different eras, thereby inheriting the passage of time. Furthermore, the reproduction of the clock tower and car drop-off entrance adds another layer to the architecture, aiming to express a sense of temporal depth. The stairwell, which retains the most distinctive features of the existing building, has been carefully preserved, restored, and inherited, while simultaneously being transformed into a space that conveys a delicate yet elegant charm through the use of modern materials and technology.

In the exterior design, the lower floors, which are reconstructed with modern technology while inheriting the design of the existing building, and the upper floors, which are a modern reinterpretation of classical architectural styles, overlap to form a substantial facade through the contrast of “old and new. ”The existing section is positioned as a three-story base, on which seven main floors are added, with the penthouse added as a roof floor, thus following the elevation configuration based on classical architecture. In the upper floors, trapezoidal bay window shapes are adopted for the sashes and balcony railings, giving the exterior shadows and undulations and ensuring visual continuity with the deep elevation of the former Postal Life Insurance Bureau headquarters building.

In the interior design, the meticulously crafted details and the powerful symmetrical facade accentuate the classical feel, creating a high-quality, rich space that evokes a sense of history. In addition to tiles and wood reminiscent of the existing building, new materials such as metal and carpet are combined to create depth through contrasting textures. Furthermore, by reconfiguring and incorporating design patterns used in the existing building, the space achieves a profound depth where layers of time overlap.
