A turn-of-the-century apartment behind Budapest’s historic City Hall takes its defining motif from the arched staircase windows of the building’s interior courtyard. The apartment’s living room and main bedroom face Pilvax köz. The building’s original architecture became the design’s starting point: a system of patinated pine and reeded glass doors runs the full depth of the flat, reinterpreting those historic arches as interior dividers — allowing living, dining, kitchen and bedroom zones to merge into one fluid space or close into separate rooms.

The material palette was composed with sensory regulation in mind. Sage green, dusty blue and deep teal sit alongside natural oak, aged bronze and warm beige — a combination chosen not only for visual coherence but for its calming effect on the nervous system. Tactile and matte surfaces dominate: reeded glass that filters light without fragmenting it, patinated pine with visible grain and depth, velvet panelling, soft bouclé and linen textiles. Acoustic comfort was addressed through layered rugs, full-height curtains and upholstered surfaces, softening the open-plan space.

The guest WC steps deliberately outside this calm register — deep forest green glazed tiles, an olive ceramic basin and a graphic Art Deco wallpaper create a contained moment of sensory intensity, offering contrast without disrupting the overall atmosphere.

Original details from the early-1900s building, including the mosaic gallery flooring and the arched staircase windows, anchor the contemporary intervention in the apartment's own history.
