UP & DOWN – A Topographic Framework for Living
In the center of Pontresina, on a sloping site shaped by alpine light and tall conifers, the project settles into the terrain rather than imposing itself upon it. Two identical rectangular volumes, shifted along the slope, create a dynamic composition that preserves existing trees, opens wide views to the south and west, and defines two distinct entrances—one above, one below—linked by a naturally lit core.
The displacement generates intermediate thresholds: semi-public spaces mediating between landscape and neighborhood. Inside, split levels foster fluid movement and social continuity, while shared spaces are positioned to encourage encounter and collective life.
The architecture engages local traditions through a restrained palette of concrete and wood, sourced nearby. A low-carbon prefabricated structural frame integrates services within hollow beams and columns, creating open, adaptable floor plates. Thickened façades become inhabitable depths—spaces to pause, observe, and inhabit the edge.
Structure becomes space, façade becomes place, and the building unfolds as a continuous dialogue between topography, community, and alpine horizon.
