The new “Erlaaer Schleife” elementary school is located at the intersection of different urban spaces, serving both as the completion of the existing educational buildings along the U6 subway line as well as the starting point for the new urban expansion area “In der Wiesen Ost”. The school is designed as a multi-angled, adaptive structure that creates diverse outdoor spaces through its angular design.
School in the Park
The eastern wing of the school aligns with the existing building and the adjacent residential thus a connection between the two schools is established, while also creating an open space to the park located to the south. The school grounds are accessed via this space. The large atrium connects all shared functions of the two schools in a flowing space: such as the dining hall, library, multipurpose room, and workshops.
A Shared School Garden
The concept of a spacious central outdoor area shared by both schools is the core idea of the design. Elevating part of this outdoor area onto the roof of the gymnasium wing provides a clear boundary and separation from the adjacent parking lot and the subway line. The dining hall, with its southern terrace and the workshops with their adjoining courtyard have direct connections to the outdoors.
Learning in Clusters
Each of the two upper floors houses two clusters, which are accessed from a spacious area. The learning spaces are arranged on three sides around this multifunctional area (MuFu), which serves as an extended learning zone and "marketplace." This area opens outward with large glass windows. An adjoining terrace functions as an outdoor classroom, creating a large, shared space between the MuFu and the terrace.
