Located at the foot of Mount Royal, in the heart of the iconic Milton-Parc neighborhood in Montreal, this interior design project is taking place on the top two floors of a residential building constructed in 1875. The project aims to reorganize the spaces to create a functional living environment suited to the daily life of a young family, while respecting the constraints of the existing building.
The project includes the reconfiguration of the kitchen and two bathrooms, the integration of three bedrooms on the upper floor, and the addition of a laundry room, an office, and a walk-in closet. Every design decision was guided by a rigorous optimization of space and a desire to maximize the flow of natural light. Although the home does not have dual-aspect light on both levels, the addition of glass partitions in strategic locations allows light to flow between rooms while preserving their privacy.
The design approach highlights the residence’s existing qualities. The high ceilings, skylight, exposed brick, and original woodwork guided the selection of a material and color palette that creates a harmonious dialogue between the building’s heritage and the new additions. The project thus reveals the potential of the existing structure by offering a bright, welcoming, and lasting environment, adapted to the evolving needs of its residents.
