Perched on a plateau nestled deep within the forest, this cabin serves as both a sanctuary for relaxation and a hub for gathering. The project is located in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge—a vast, wild territory in the Argenteuil region situated along the Ottawa River, midway between Montreal and Ottawa. Designed as a direct response to the landscape and the Nordic climate, the project prioritizes a compact, durable, and discreet form. Its pale grey wood cladding provides a sober materiality, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the forest throughout the changing seasons.

The goal was to create a retreat that is both intimate and communal—capable of hosting shared moments and solitary reflections alike. With a footprint of less than 100 m², the project reflects a contemporary shift toward the responsible use of resources, favoring a "less, but better" approach. This compactness fosters an efficient spatial organization and versatile uses without compromising on comfort.

The roofline was modulated to push the private quarters—the primary bedroom and office—to the upper floor, opposite the entrance. This strategy maintains a low, unassuming profile on the arrival side along the ascending dirt road. While the main facade presents itself with restraint, the taller elevations unfold toward the forest, featuring expansive glazing largely invisible from the path. Starting from a simple volume, the architecture reveals itself gradually as one moves through the site, resulting in four distinct facades, each responding to its specific orientation and context.

Inside, the layout was conceived as a series of spaces carved into the building's mass rather than a mere succession of rooms. Designed to maximize natural light and airflow, the layout features a longitudinal axis connecting the entrances and a transverse axis that bathes the central living area in light. Under a cathedral ceiling, the main area brings together the living room, kitchen, and dining room. This heart of the cabin opens onto a 180-degree panorama, inviting the forest to permeate the living spaces.

A skylight illuminates both the staircase and the central room, accentuating the spatial continuity. Wood paneling covers most surfaces, creating a warm, enveloping atmosphere that evokes the coziness of traditional cabins.

More than just a vacation home, the project offers an immersive experience where every space dialogues with the forest. Compact and light-filled, it provides a peaceful setting that encourages relaxation and transforms daily life into a true communion with nature.
