The first challenge is to transform a largely enclosed and inherently non-public space, which together with the two neighboring halls forms an urban barrier, into a high-quality urban space. The existing streetscapes must be transformed into livable spaces, and a significant amount of infrastructure, including a ramp and existing buildings, must be integrated into the project.
A maximum number of building components must be reused in a qualified manner, and, above all, the site must be improved in terms of its urban climate. The goal is to create large, space-efficient apartments at a high density – while adhering to noise protection regulations – and to give top priority to economic considerations, as the apartments must remain affordable while minimizing their ecological footprint.
The resulting questions focus on the following topics: How does the urban planning respond to density, noise, and the need for distinctive green spaces? What are the typologies of these green spaces and open areas? How do we interact within the complex interplay of diversity, ecology, and economics in the realm of housing typologies? What are forward-looking construction methods? And how does reuse create added value, also on an architectural and urban planning level? These questions were central to our multidisciplinary team.
