The La Coste Residence, in Lévis, draws on the character of its surrounding landscape. The sweeping view of Québec City, the movement of the St. Lawrence River, and the rhythm of the seasons shape a family home oriented toward the outdoors. The building’s massing is shaped by the different views and the sun’s path. Several terraces extend the home outward, creating places to enjoy the site at different times of day.
This relationship with the landscape is reflected in the interior layout. The living spaces are located on the upper floor and open onto the river, while the ground floor accommodates the sleeping quarters. At the heart of the house, a circulation spine organizes the layout, distinguishing service areas from living spaces.
The hybrid steel-and-wood structure supports this design intent. The steel framing in the living areas allows for long spans and expansive views, while the lightweight wood-frame construction defines rooms of a more intimate scale. A warm material palette, with wood playing a prominent role, complements the interiors bathed in natural light.
