The Saint-Damien Residence fulfills the aspiration of a large family to settle on their ancestral farmland and fully embrace this enchanting site, located at the threshold between open fields and mountains.
Situated in Saint-Damien, along the river’s edge, the residence integrates delicately into its natural surroundings. The linear volume follows the site’s topography and fragments in response to the river’s sinuous course, carefully preserving the existing riparian vegetation buffer.
Upon arrival, the building blends seamlessly into the vegetative framework formed by mature conifers, inserting itself with restraint within the forest canopy. On the upper level, vertical wood cladding adopts a tone and rhythm that echo the texture of tree bark, while the natural stone base at ground level enhances the perception of the upper volume gently hovering above the landscape. Vertical slats, aligned with the residence’s volumetric expression, filter light across the covered terrace, strengthening the relationship between interior and exterior spaces. This terrace extends along a clear axis in the landscape, aligned with the bridge crossing, opening visual perspectives toward the fields. It connects the two extremities of the volume through a fluid pathway that accompanies movement along the river, maintaining a continuous relationship with nature across the main façade.
The fragmentation of the volume creates a central articulation — the project’s pivotal joint — which houses the entrance and staircase. This sequence defines the transition between day and night areas. The living spaces, located on the upper floor, take advantage of this elevation to benefit from unobstructed views and abundant natural light.
The project emphasizes the integration of noble materials such as stone, wood, and steel. Selected for their intrinsic qualities and durability, these materials serve both structural and cladding functions, inside and out, ensuring material continuity and a clear architectural expression.
Wood decking was favored for its high load-bearing capacity and slender profile. This structural finesse allows the roofline to be modulated in response to views and solar orientation while maintaining formal elegance. Beneath it, a continuous clerestory glazing band preserves a constant visual connection with the sky and surrounding forest. Extending around the building’s perimeter, this glazing enhances the perception of a roof plane that floats lightly above the living spaces.
The Saint-Damien Residence is thus deeply rooted in its territory, conceived to establish a sensitive dialogue with the surrounding forest landscape. Through its siting strategy, volumetric composition, and material palette aligned with the site’s natural textures, the architecture integrates harmoniously into its environment. It offers a family living environment that is both open to nature and protective — a home whose spaces gracefully accommodate the passage of time and evolving patterns of use.
