The design for these homes was driven by their relationship to the Bay Run. Our site analysis showed that we could combine the best views of Parramatta River, Timbrell Park and the Sydney city skyline from an elevated position and link this to a private rear yard, getting the best from the public and private world.
The three main areas of the house, namely the private garden, living areas and elevated terrace are connected via a wide staircase. This space stretches through the house from front to back across two levels.
The front of the houses are part of the theatrical backdrop of the popular Bay Run around Iron Cove of the Parramatta River. The Bay Run is used by all segments of society and is one of Sydney’s great promenades. As such we wanted to dress the houses appropriately in a humble but considered way offering a crafted façade of interlocking light-coloured bricks, framed windows and visually soft timber cladding. The depth and interplay of light across the facade is ever-changing and a little surprising. Together with the landscaping, the design sits well between a Federation cottage and contemporary neighbour, while introducing a burst of visual interest in an environment desperate in need of more architectural quality.
