2018 NYCxDESIGN winner Royal Orthodontics is bold without sacrificing function.
Jamie Royal wanted a fresh look for her orthodontic practice, moving from the Upper East Side of Manhattan to the East 20s. She reached out to Float Studio with a proposition that was a little unusual for them: a whole brand refresh, including logo, exterior and signage, on top of an interior gut renovation of the space.
There are cues that make the space identifiable as a doctor’s office: a reception desk, a consultation room, examination bays. But the desk is custom made out of pink and green speckled terrazzo; the consultation room is kept private with oak slats that are referenced throughout the space by the oak veneered cabinetry; the bays are bright but mature, with functional light that manages to be decorative and friendly, a departure from the usual garish fluorescents.
These bold elements contrast with the concrete-looking flooring, which allows for a clean look that has little to do with the uninspiring carpeting usually found in waiting rooms. What’s fashioned is a new way to look at a doctor’s office - one that’s welcoming and pleasant, not one that give them nothing to do but think of how slow time is passing or dread upcoming procedures.
