Landscape by Kiasma Studio
At RU in Hyderabad, the landscape by Kiasma Studio is conceived as an extension of the building’s industrial architecture. It works between the built form and the site, creating a connection between structure, material, and terrain. The landscape is not treated as a separate layer but as part of the overall spatial experience.
The design responds to the site’s level differences by working with them instead of flattening them. Exposed rock formations and tiered stone walls define the ground plane and establish a base for the building. This approach allows the structure to sit within the site while maintaining a clear relationship between the lower and upper portions of the building.
Planting plays a key role in shaping this relationship. Climbing vegetation is introduced across the facade, forming a layer that interacts with the building over time. This reduces the visual rigidity of the structure and allows it to change gradually as the planting grows. The facade becomes less static and more responsive to its environment.
At the ground level, the material palette is controlled. Interlocking pavers create a clear and usable surface. The planting strategy is organized in layers. Ground covers define the base, while grasses and trees introduce variation in height and movement. This combination allows the landscape to remain functional while adding depth to the space.
The entry is designed as a sunken space. It is defined by stone and planting, creating a sense of enclosure. This transition slows down movement into the building and creates a shift in scale. The surrounding planting also contributes to cooling and reduces noise, improving the quality of the entry experience.
The landscape at RU works in relation to the architecture. It supports the building by grounding it within the site and introducing change over time. Through material selection, planting, and spatial planning, the design creates a consistent relationship between the built form and its surroundings.
