Ruby Cottage is a four-season retreat on Lac McGregor in Val-des-Monts, Québec, designed by Linebox Studio for long-time clients seeking a gathering place for their family. Perched lightly above the rugged Canadian Shield, the cottage appears to hover within the forest, its elevated form resting on slender columns that echo surrounding tree trunks. This approach preserved the natural rock face, avoided blasting, and maximized views toward the deep, clear lake.
Clad in black metal siding, the structure recedes quietly into its woodland setting, camouflaged until glimpsed from the water where it reads as a refined, almost otherworldly silhouette. A slim metal bridge leads from the parking landing to the main entrance, where a bright red front door offers a striking counterpoint to the muted exterior. Inside, the palette shifts to bright, airy interiors defined by white walls, pale wood ceilings, and expansive glazing. Full-height windows with Juliet balconies line the lakeside façade, opening the interior to the landscape and extending the sense of space.
The single-level plan prioritizes flow and connection, with generous communal areas, a screened-in porch, and ample accommodation for adult children and grandchildren. The kitchen’s picture-frame window captures the forest beyond, anchoring the experience of daily rituals in the natural setting. Throughout, the architecture balances bold modern volumes with quiet restraint, resulting in a cottage that feels both timeless and deeply attuned to its environment.
