The brief was to raise the roof of an existing bungalow to add another floor to the house. Two new bedrooms with ensuites and a double height central space with a sculptural stair. One of the bedrooms is the master bedroom with a very large bathroom and walk in wardrobe space. The new roof is highly insulated and the windows are triple glazed. There’s underfloor heating and an MVHR system for the air change. The whole of the underside of the roof is clad in high quality birch faced ply in large single sheets. The bathrooms are both clad in real Italian marble. Lighting strips are set flush into the face of the birch ply and marble. The materials are all elemental - timber, marble and steel. The external walls are clad in a rainscreen of Douglas Fir. The red helical stair has no central post - its structural integrity comes from the 8mm steel balustrade plate that was rolled into a curve from one piece of steel sheet.
