Salford Central Station

Cast toughened glass with aqua light

Salford Central Station underwent extensive redevelopment work with a view to increase the amount of passengers travelling via the station. It was the aim of architects Austin-Smith:Lord to achieve this by creating a well lit, user friendly and easily accessible environment compatible with its bustling metropolitan surroundings.

The inclusion of an aqua Lumaglass screen lends the main concourse a futuristic and hi-tech feel paying compliment to the modern and progressively focused tone in and around the city itself. The installation throws out a welcoming aura, ever constant through day to night and acts as a beacon by which commuters are led to the departure and arrival information displays, ticket office and platforms. The internal face of the screen was cut to a rake to follow the staircase with a handrail affixed to its aluminium frame allowing it to act as both a visual and functional aid. Being partially exposed to the elements on one side it was built to withstand both variable weather conditions and fluctuating temperatures, with no compromise on the performance of its integrated electroluminescent lighting system.
