Santisook Midtown Pattani is a contemporary reinterpretation of one of Pattani’s legendary hotels, reimagined to preserve its emotional connection with the city while transforming it into a modern urban retreat for a new generation of travelers.
Located in the heart of Pattani’s economic district, the project occupies a former commercial building structure surrounded by long-established local businesses and everyday urban activity. Originally developed as a commercial block within the city center, the building has long been embedded within Pattani’s economic and social landscape. Rather than erasing this existing condition, the design preserves the relationship between the architecture and its surrounding commercial life, allowing the project to remain connected to the rhythm of the neighborhood.
The original 3-storey building has the hotel located on the 3rd floor, attached to the commercial block on the first and second floor. Retail spaces continue to operate today, maintaining the active commercial character of the building. This coexistence between old businesses and the renewed hotel creates a layered urban experience where memory, commerce, and hospitality intersect. The project therefore becomes not only a destination for visitors but also a continuation of the everyday life that has long defined the district.
One narrow shophouse block proposes the ground level for the hotel entrance, opening itself to the city through a café space that acts as a social interface between guests and the local community. Designed as an inviting public atmosphere, the café activates the streetscape and encourages interaction between travelers and local residents, further strengthening the building’s relationship with its urban surroundings. An open stair hall serves as the vertical circulation, and a large skylight lets natural light in. It creates small pocket spaces on the second floor facing the internal court as a transition to the hotel lobby on the third floor. The guestrooms are on the third floor facing along the main road, with double-glass soundproofing added.
The architectural concept is driven by simplicity, openness, and human-centered spatial experience. Clean geometric forms are combined with carefully controlled natural light and ventilation to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere amid the dense urban environment. Spatial transitions between public, semi-public, and private areas are carefully layered to balance intimacy and openness throughout the hotel experience.
Materiality plays an important role in expressing harmony and timelessness. Neutral palettes, textured finishes, and subtle references to local identity are integrated into both architecture and interiors, leaving some of the existing elements to speak alongside new material proposals. The combinations vary, creating spaces that feel contemporary while remaining rooted in the cultural character of Pattani.
Responding to the tropical climate of Southern Thailand, passive environmental strategies by adding a green wall façade, rooftop greenery, open court ventilation, and daylight optimization are incorporated to enhance thermal comfort and reduce heat gain. These environmental considerations contribute to both sustainability and the overall spatial experience.
More than a renovation, Santisook Midtown Pattani represents the revival of a beloved urban landmark. The project bridges memory and modernity, transforming a historic commercial structure and once-iconic hotel into a contemporary destination that continues to connect people, culture, and the evolving identity of Pattani.
