In Davos Platz, the central district of Davos, Switzerland, the modernisation and expansion of a new school complex has been completed by CURA Architekten. The project raises the bar for sustainable construction in the educational sector. The Munich-based architectural studio’s approach prioritises responsible planning and circular construction, ensuring harmony in both context and environment.
CURA’s design integrates the existing school structure, reducing the new building volume by 40 percent. When combined with a timber extension, the project achieves a significantly reduced carbon footprint.
Integrating old and new for resource efficiency
From the outside, the school building appears like a new structure. By combining old and new, a significant amount of grey energy was saved. “While a quarter of all carbon emissions in Switzerland currently come from the building sector, every new building faces the challenge of resource-efficient construction and energy-efficient operation,” says CURA. “Therefore, it's only natural to seek an integrated solution with existing buildings, especially in a place that has such a direct connection to future generations and aims to serve as a role model for them.”
The school’s design is a carefully considered exercise in architectural layering. A large wooden “U” sits over and around the existing structure, preserving it while meeting new technical requirements and the increased need for space.
In terms of urban planning and functionality, the existing building acts as a logical connecting element between the two school wings. To meet the increased spatial demands of the project, the old building has been extended along its long sides and a new story has been added.
The new building extends over the entire existing structure. It is completely enclosed by a new facade that meets thermal requirements while creating a coherent architectural language.
Promoting connectivity and passive ventilation
The ground floor of the connecting building bridges the school street and the playground. This floor is oriented outwards, while the upper floors are arranged around an interior atrium. The atrium and corridor spaces are designed as appealing and versatile communal areas. The school’s access zones therefore become vibrant places in which to convene and connect. The extension to the courtyard facade allows for cross-connections within the school rooms, promoting modern and flexible teaching methods.
In warmer months, mechanical ventilation is not necessary. Interior windows can be opened, providing cross ventilation for all learning and work areas. By harnessing a natural chimney effect, the atrium ensures passive, energy-efficient ventilation.
Future-proofing
CURA’s approach to the school’s renovation and expansion demonstrates the potential for future-proofing existing buildings without abandoning or demolishing them. The studio has allowed the transformation to remain legible in the school’s interior, providing students with a tangible example of how to engage mindfully and sustainably with the built environment.
