This renovation and extension project transforms a mid- 19th-century Schoolmaster’s House, originally designed by the eminent Gothic Revival architect William Butterfield.
Built in the 1850s as part of a larger ecclesiastical and educational initiative led by Archdeacon John Sandford, the building exemplifies Butterfield’s hallmark use of polychrome brickwork and crafted detail.

The extension uses decorative brickwork in varying tones to echo the polychrome richness of Butterfield’s design. High- performance thermal elements, including triple glazing and internal insulation to the existing external walls, contribute to a long-term reduction in energy use
