Located along the Schifflände on the shores of Lake Greifensee in Uster, Switzerland, Seerestaurant Uster is a modest intervention within a popular recreational landscape. Rather than asserting itself as a singular object, Fiechter & Salzmann Architekten designed the single-storey structure as a permeable pavilion that mediates between the lakefront, pedestrian movement, and nearby transport infrastructure, including a bus stop to the north.
The building’s low profile and extended eaves allow it to sit lightly within its context while establishing a spatial presence. Its orientation addresses multiple directions, engaging both the water and the flow of people arriving from the town. In doing so, the pavilion becomes less a destination in isolation and more a node within a larger public network.
Modular roofs as spatial framework
The architectural concept is organised around six equal square units, each defined by its own roof. These roof structures serve as the primary organising system for the programme and spatial experience. Their tent-like timber frameworks remain open at the centre, with integrated skylights that bring daylight into the interiors below.
Inside the restaurant, two of these roof modules define the main dining areas, shaping the space through height, light, and material expression. The remaining modules extend outward, covering outdoor seating and circulation zones. One unit accommodates building services above the kitchen, demonstrating integration of technical systems within the overall architectural logic. This modular approach allows the building to remain flexible and legible, breaking down the scale of the programme into smaller, human-scaled components that respond to different uses and environmental conditions.
Material expression and environmental response
Material selection reinforces the pavilion’s environmental performance and its connection to place. The exposed roof structures are constructed from dark-stained spruce, a renewable material that provides warmth and tactility. Reed infill panels soften the interiors acoustically while contributing to a low-impact palette.
The glazing of the restaurant ensures uninterrupted visual connections to the lake, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day and supporting engagement with the surrounding landscape. Deep, cantilevered eaves provide passive solar control, limiting heat gain in summer while allowing low winter sunlight to penetrate the interior. Together, these strategies reduce operational energy demand while maintaining occupant comfort.
Climate-responsive outdoor spaces
The project emphasises outdoor use across changing weather conditions. Two independent roof types extend beyond the enclosed restaurant, each calibrated for specific environmental functions. One provides shade for lakeside seating, protecting visitors from direct sun exposure, while another shelters the kiosk area from rain, ensuring usability in less favourable weather. These covered zones enable the pavilion to function throughout the year, supporting seasonal variation without relying heavily on mechanical systems. The architecture encourages engagement with the outdoors, aligning with the recreational character of the site.
Public interface and everyday use
Beyond its role as a restaurant, the pavilion is designed as a public interface. Along the façade, beneath the extended roof overhangs, a series of built-in benches recall the typology of transit seating. Positioned to serve both patrons and passersby, they support informal occupation such as waiting, resting, or social interaction. This expands the building’s function, allowing it to operate as a shared civic space rather than a purely commercial venue. Walkers, cyclists, and commuters can engage with the structure without entering it, reinforcing its accessibility and integration into daily life.
