In the spring of 2022, Smart Wires, a rapidly growing leader in grid-enhancing technologies, made a strategic decision to relocate its global headquarters from Union City, California, to Durham, North Carolina. This move was more than a shift in geography—it was a thoughtful response to the company’s accelerating growth, the need to attract top-tier talent, and a desire to elevate the well-being of its employees.

The new headquarters, totaling approximately 42,000 square feet, embodies Smart Wires’ commitment to innovation and operational excellence. Designed and delivered through a two-phased approach by Little’s fully integrated team, the space creates a dynamic and collaborative work environment tailored for the company’s evolving needs.

The Office Phase comprises 20,624 square feet and thoughtfully combines private offices with open workstations. This layout not only encourages collaboration but also establishes a welcoming environment for both employees and visitors. It connects seamlessly—both visually and functionally—to the adjoining Lab Phase, which spans 20,214 square feet and is dedicated to prototyping, testing, and product demonstrations.

In addition to the primary facility, the project includes a new 1,300-square-foot utility building, purpose-built to house electrical reactors. This crucial infrastructure supports increased on-site power capacity, enabling rigorous equipment testing and advancing Smart Wires’ technological development.

Barringer Construction served as the General Contractor, bringing deep expertise and craftsmanship to the execution of the facility, while JLL provided third party Project Management services, ensuring seamless coordination and delivery throughout the project lifecycle. This purpose-built headquarters reflects the company’s innovative spirit and steadfast commitment to operational excellence.
