SOL BEACH NAMHAE BARAE BAKERY

SOL BEACH NAMHAE BARAE BAKERY sits at the edge of the coastline in Mijo-myeon, Namhae-gun, South Korea, facing out across the archipelago. Namhae holds within it a landscape of islands encircled by sea, rocky shores sculpted by the waves, and a coastline that shifts with the tides. The traditional practice of ‘barae,’ walking the shoreline to gather seafood, continues to this day as a living part of local life. Rather than drawing on the region’s nature and culture as surface decoration, we set out to explore how the particular rhythm, pace, and way of life embedded in ‘barae’ might be translated into space. The result is a place designed not simply for choosing bread, but for quietly holding the currents and memories of the sea.

The interior connects softly to the outside through tall windows, organized around restrained materials and a considered structure. The main showcase is planned at varying heights that trace the movement of ‘barae’ along a winding coastline, while the wave lighting installed beneath the display units draws the sea’s sensibility into the space, adding layers of visual depth.

The terrazzo floor is finished with crushed shells and barnacles gathered from the shores of Namhae. The skylights are modeled on the form of the barnacle, and natural light entering through their circular perforations travels slowly across the interior, tracing a steady path as it moves. The intensity and angle of that light shift subtly with the hour, and the atmosphere of the space settles and changes quietly in response. The back wall behind the counter is finished in a rough texture with irregular perforations that evoke the barnacle, giving material form to the texture of a coastline shaped by erosion and accumulation. The net structure of ‘jukbangryeom,’ the traditional bamboo-stake fish trap, runs through the curtains, lighting, and upholstery fabric, while the weave of the ‘sokuri,’ the basket once used to carry the catch, is reflected in the detailing of the textile furniture.

On the external terrace, a water feature takes its form from ‘pasikdae,’ the wave-cut rock platforms characteristic of Namhae’s coastal topography. The shape of a shoreline carved by waves is rendered in a low, quietly flowing water surface and a stepped structure. The sunlight reflected off the water spreads across the interior ceiling, lending the space a living quality. The movement of that shifting light changes with the hour and the weather, silently dispersing the time of the Namhae sea throughout the space.

The rooftop is conceived as an ‘island of barnacles.’ Structures of varying sizes and heights are arranged like a barnacle colony, finished in mosaic tile with a mother-of-pearl texture that evokes the barnacle. No artificial lighting fills the space here, only sunlight and shadow. The sea and islands of Namhae visible from the rooftop overlap with these structures, and the space itself functions as another landform, continuous with and resonant of the surrounding landscape.

This project does not stop at surface representation or the aestheticization of local nature and culture. We sought to carry the passage of time specific to Namhae, the sense of place it holds, and the quiet accumulation of the lives lived here into the structure, materials, and movement of light within the space. It is a way of connecting a space to its place and a new attempt to build enduring value through design.
