BK SMART EXPRESS

Since 1954, when the Whopper first came off an open flame, Burger King has kept pace with cities and cultures around the world for more than half a century, holding fast to an unchanging core: “the bold, unmistakable taste of food cooked over fire.” Today’s cities move faster than ever, and the lives of the people in them have grown more dynamic in turn. Against this backdrop, Burger King needed a new store model, one built for the digital age.

BK Smart Express is our answer: a digitally driven space that compresses ‘speed’ and ‘bold flavor’ into a single, cohesive experience, and in doing so, proposes a new kind of brand encounter for the future. The ambition goes beyond efficient ordering and eating. It is about designing the customer’s ‘time’ itself and creating a space where Burger King’s identity can be felt even amid movement.

The first test bed for Burger King’s next-generation store format, BK Smart Express, sits at the heart of Seoul Station, conceived expressly around the nature of a major transit hub where constant movement and connection converge. For the traveler passing through, for the customer who wants speed and a clear path from door to meal, the store delivers an experience that is efficient and tightly composed.

The space is organized into four zones, each calibrated to a different purpose and pace. The ‘FAST TRACK’ route connects kiosk ordering to pickup with the fewest steps, creating a seamless, uninterrupted flow even amid the bustle of Seoul Station.

At the center of the floor, the ‘EXPRESS’ zone is optimized for the short-stay customer. Standing tables and single seats encourage quick ordering and a swift meal, and the furniture here was designed with equal care for this place’s specifics and the needs of people on the move. The standing tables are open at the base to accommodate luggage and large bags, and a range of seating from solo to six-person tables ensures the zone works for many different types of visitors. Built-in phone holders on the tables add an extra layer of convenience for travelers, helping them keep an eye on their departure times. The tables themselves are more compact than standard, suited to the tight floor plan and efficient circulation the space demands.

Also at the center of the floor, ‘LOCAL TRAIN’ is a casual zone of smaller tables for one or two, designed for a relaxed, easy meal. Custom stools in both this zone and the ‘EXPRESS’ lounge are designed to encourage customers to eat and move on, each fitted with a perforated shelf bearing the Burger King logo beneath the seat, providing a clean, hygienic place to set a bag or other belongings.

Toward the back of the store, ‘SLOW LOUNGE’ offers a longer stay. Within the noise and energy of the station, it provides a place to rest properly, with back seating that allows customers to settle and enjoy their meal at a more comfortable pace. This inclusive design reflects the full range of travelers who pass through Seoul Station and contributes to the broader public convenience.

At the heart of BK Smart Express is an expanded digital experience. A long run of media panels across the ceiling and down the walls dynamically presents imagery drawn from the brand and its setting: flames, produce, burgers, brand campaigns, and visual references to Seoul Station itself, conveying speed and intensity. The media wall shifts with the season and context, refreshing the store’s atmosphere, surfacing brand stories and menu content naturally, and dramatically reducing the volume of single-use printed materials.

BK Smart Express is not simply a fast food restaurant. It is a flexible space capable of holding two opposing rhythms at once, delivering a deep and memorable taste experience even in the briefest visit, while accommodating the full spectrum from transit to extended stay. At one of Seoul’s most dynamic locations, it brings the essence of the Burger King brand to life through digital technology and considered circulation, and in doing so, sets a new benchmark for what the brand’s stores can be.
