Nestled along the shores of Lake Rosseau, this private waterfront retreat explores the balance between enclosed and open architecture, managing privacy from the road and neighboring properties while maximizing views to the lake and surrounding woodland. In collaboration with a local architect, Studio Author developed the overall plan and spatial organization, guiding the project’s primary architectural gestures through to the interior.
The interior design draws inspiration from the surrounding deciduous forest, emphasizing tactile materials and carefully framed views that dissolve the boundary between indoors and out. A consistent palette of natural ash wood is complemented by patinated metal and concrete, creating a contemporary retreat that both contrasts with and harmonizes with its natural setting.
The main-floor great room is organized beneath a rhythm of wood ceiling beams aligned with the vertical mullions of expansive glazing, reinforcing visual order while framing views to the landscape. The ash wood kitchen centers on twin 12-foot islands, articulated with natural tactility, restrained detailing, and leathered black granite countertops. An oversized suspended metal canopy introduces a subtle material counterpoint. A neutral, pared-back palette unifies the kitchen, living, and dining areas into a cohesive spatial sequence. A metal-clad fireplace wall anchors the space, while a serene muskoka room at the opposite end extends the interior outward to a generous terrace overlooking the pool and lake beyond.
A discreet pantry with open shelving and integrated refrigerator and freezer towers conceals functional elements, preserving the clarity of the primary living space. Adjacent to the main living area, a flexible den serves as a transitional buffer to the principal suite, enhancing privacy and establishing a distinct retreat. The suite embraces an open-plan layout that foregrounds its relationship with the surrounding forest through full-height glazing, effectively dissolving the interior-landscape boundary. A low-profile, integrated bed anchors the room, fostering an uninterrupted visual connection to the natural environment.
A freestanding vanity with an integrated concrete sink faces outward, complemented by a suspended mirror that maintains visual continuity between the open-concept bathroom and bedroom. The shower and toilet are subtly enclosed within wood-lined volumes, reinforcing the suite’s calm, restrained aesthetic and spatial simplicity. A wood-lined stairwell leads to the lower level, where three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms—including a
playful children’s bunkroom—are arranged to balance privacy and connection. A generous media room and concealed wet bar anchor the entertainment spaces, flowing seamlessly to the swimming pool and terrace beyond. A discreet powder room completes the level, while a consistent palette of warm wood and refined finishes reinforces a cohesive, layered interior experience that extends throughout the home.
