This 5 storey residence is located within an important terrace of Victorian warehouses in the Spitalfields area of London with only the facade retained from the existing building, and a new basement. 2 light wells are created through the building to maximise the South facing natural light and allow it deep into the long and narrow floor plate. Care was given to consider the original detailing and the quality of the existing building which is followed by material choices of hand made bricks, Douglas Fir solid floor boards, thermally broken steel windows and Lime render which naturally sit along with the existing Victorian warehouse facade. This is very typical of our approach as a studio where the history, detail and context of an existing building acts as a catalyst. It was important that the new rear elevation has a subtle relationship with the eclectic modified rear elevations, celebrating the diversity rather than exposing the shortcomings.
