Real estate developer and operator Brookfield Properties announces the launch of two public pavilions at the 2024 London Festival of Architecture (LFA). The pavilions, “Radial”, designed by Foster + Partners and “Squiggle” by NEON, are located at the plazas outside Principal Place and Citypoint, respectively. Designed to enhance the public realm around two of Brookfield Properties’ key London office buildings, the pavilions provide occupiers and surrounding communities with new ways to engage with the spaces while drawing in new visitors.
Designed as landmarks, the pavilions are inspired by themes of circularity, community and sustainability. Responding to the LFA’s overarching theme of “Reimagine”, they utilise everyday materials in innovative ways, encouraging reflection on material recycling, reuse, and climate change.
“Squiggle”, constructed from an off-the-shelf building material; flexible ducting, is a playful representation of the non-linear nature of life. Designed by artist and architect, Viliina Koivisto and Mark Nixon, the design draws on the innate physical properties and tactile nature of the ducting, which is commonly used to transport gas, water and cabling inside building structures. The bright green and yellow colours for the ducting were selected to provide a bold injection of colour into the Citypoint Plaza. At the end of the installation, the ducting will be recycled into products such as shopping bags, bins, detergent containers, trays, flowerpots, garden furniture, floor tiles, ropes, and crates.
