The new SR1938 University Centre with agross project area of 3,043 m2 and a built volume of 13,082 m3, houses the Areasof Humanities and Biology of theUniversity of Pisa and is located at the corner of Via Risorgimento and Via Nicola Pisano, in an area that hasundergone extensive environmental reclamation to achieve an urban regeneration project.
There are fourinter connected volumes with different heights each with distinct functions, classrooms of the Humanities Area,Entrance Vestibule, Auditorium, Laboratories of the Biological Area.
The Pole includes an external casing with astructural function, in exposed reinforced concrete made with a mixture of aggregates and laid in place through a rampant shelves and internal phenolic panel to make the surface homogeneous for successive jet cycles, sandblasted, washed and treated with aprotective scratch-proof finish.
The building is equipped with a mixed geothermal system consisting of two geothermal yield wells and oneintegrated outlet with thirty-eight probes able to guarantee summer cooling and winter heating, limiting asmuch as possible the consumption and thermal dispersion of the building, optimizing the microclimatic system indoor.
Different from the other buildings, itenters the streets on which it overlooks with elegance and respect: the large window on Via Risorgimento is a watchful and attentive eye on passers by to whom it refers the pleasure of events inside the Auditorium. There is not an ‘inside’ and an ‘outside’, but a sharing of the space that takes place in the lobby, the large public square that iscovered but open for the benefit of the entire local community, thus becoming a connection point between Via Risorgimento and the internal garden of the Center.
The functional resilience of the building through the flexible system that allows adaptations to needs different from the current ones, the elimination of any superfluous decorative element to obtain an economic intervention consistent with the need to optimize the life cycle and the built-in energy, the awareness of social values and justice through the commemoration of events related to Racial Laws, and the choice of a name that recalls the commitment by the University of Pisa on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the signing of Racial Laws in Pisa in 1938 in the presidential villa inside the Parco di San Rossore, are some of the aspects that make it one of a kind.
