Walking in the Bernardo Rucellai street in Florence, everyone looks up to see the American Church of Saint James. On the other hand from the street no one noticesthat behind the Church grow its gardens, one is an italian garden near the pastor's house, the other one is nestled between the boundary walls and the Carriage House, a space of approximately 200sqm with no identity, with two cypress trees as unique elements of value, probably planted at the time of the construction of the Church in the first half of 1900.
The renovation performed has given birth to a lush garden, full of scents and sounds.Through a hedge of bamboo, from the italian garden with its rigid and geometric shapes, you go to a romantic garden, with herbaceous plants and shrubs with abundant flowering, a pool with water lilies and papyrus and the sound of water in the background. It’s natural to stop on a bench and be surrounded by scents and sounds of nature, looking through the pergola topped by a wisteria. Some existing architectural elements were saved and adapted, as the two marble steps used as benches under the pergola, or the old altar used as table to accommodate refreshments. Pets of Reverend who in past years have lived in St. James still oversee the garden and on tombstones in their memory there is all affection of their masters.
