The LIGA 21 Subsolanus exhibition is the result of the first public competition organized by LIGA, Espacio para Arquitectura in Mexico City. With the competition, the logistical issues that usually limit the development of any exhibition project were subjected to the poetic beauty of an invisible gesture: transporting air from the roof of a building projected by the architect Augusto Álvarez, more than 30 meters high, to the gallery at street level, using a transparent plastic tube 60 centimeters in diameter.
This physically connects the two areas that make up LIGA for the first time: the exhibition hall on the first floor and the penthouse on the roof, where conferences and debates take place.
It is up to architectural practice to build an environment controlled by and for man: the shelter. Inside, we are protected from any and all conditions of nature that can reach us, and over time, we have developed systems that help us exercise control over the forces of nature, be it the sun, the rain or the wind.
The intervention proposed for the LIGA space subverts this logic through a sensory experience. The outside air is conducted through a duct located on the roof of the building to the inside of the gallery on the first floor. The action is induced, but its control is out of our reach, since its effect depends on the momentary weather conditions. These changes are interpreted in the movement of the plastic membrane, which can be full or empty, giving shape and volume to the invisible matter. For the structure, a completely independent exoskeleton was proposed, which only touches the building at its extremities.
This intervention may go unnoticed by the most distracted passers-by during the day, just like so many other infrastructures that are vital to the functioning of buildings (bells, conduits, tanks, etc.). On the first floor, meanwhile, the internal space actually becomes a reflection of the forces of the air masses floating over the city.
